Consistency And Bodybuilding: Is It Always The Way To Go?

Consistency is the key when it comes to bodybuilding but not always. We can all agree that some tasks should be completed consistently over months and years in order to achieve success on the bodybuilding stage. We need to consume a great deal of protein. We must train using heavy compound movements as well as perfect-formed isolation movements. Over time, the consistency use of these tasks leads to an anabolic environment in our bodies which invariably lead to muscle gains. There are some bodybuilding factors, however, which should be rotated on and off in order to maintain their effectiveness. Let’s discuss a few of these factors.

Anabolic Steroids

If you are a use of anabolic steroids, you should already be aware of the importance of rotating off your cycle every 10 to 16 weeks in order to protect the body. However, there are other reasons as well. Steroids lose their effectiveness when used for periods of 16, 20, or more weeks. When bodybuilders remain on steroids for prolonged time periods, their gains begin to disappear and the side effects they are experiencing begin to become worse and worse. Eventually, there will come a time when the bodybuilder is only taking steroids to maintain his level of muscle mass, while fighting a wealth of side effects. If this is the case with you, and you’ve been taking steroids for any period of time over 16 weeks, it’s time to spend a few days researching post-cycle therapy (PCT) then breaking yourself of the steroid habit. It’s an aid not something which should be used year-round.


Creatine, glutamine, and other commonly used bodybuilding supplements tend to lose their effectiveness when used for periods longer than 4 months. If you have been using a popular bodybuilding supplement for a long time, you should attempt a break from it. While you may lose five pounds of water on your first break from creatine, you may discover that upon your return to usage, you add a new ten pounds that you didn’t expect.


This is a supplement which many bodybuilders attempt to remain “on” forever once they start using it. ECA (25 mg ephedrine, 200 mg caffeine, and 250 mg aspirin) is remarkably effective for allowing the bodybuilder to shed some body fat while eating just about anything he wants. This is great for maintaining a bit of size in the off-season when the diet is poor and the lifting is big. However, when the pre-contest dieting phase begins, you won’t be able to count on ECA to help you shed body fat and keep the muscle on. Rather, your body will be dependent upon it. This will result in the supplement being essentially ineffective for you. Be smart. Train hard, and use ECA twice per year. You can use it once in the off-season to level off fat gains, and again in the pre-contest dieting phase. You should never use ECA for more than eight weeks in a row, and never more than 6 days in a row. Keep those receptors fresh!
